Building a Wooden Shed
The first step in building a wooden shed is to make sure that you have a firm level base. This could be a concrete or paved area, or a Portabase or Eco Easy Base, as long as it if solid and flat. For help with this, try our Guide to Building a Base. If you are using a Walton’s Portabase, or have constructed your own wooden base, then treating your wooden bearers with a good quality wood treatment is an excellent way to combat wood rot and to extend the life of your shed base.
We recommend that at least two people build a shed, as it may prove difficult to insert screws and to join panels together whilst holding them in the right place at the same time.
To start with, lay the base of the shed onto your pre-prepared foundations. Plan where the door and windows will be, and then attach the rear gable onto the base, followed by the door and window panels. Secure the bottom rails of the wooden shed to the base and position the roof according to position of cut-outs in the front and rear gables, ensuring that a clear overhang is left at the front and back.
Following the enclosed instructions, fix the roof to the walls, and lay the included mineral roofing felt in position, allowing for an equal overhang at both sides. Use tacks to secure the roofing felt on both sides, tucking it up around the framing of the roof where necessary. Once that is complete, position the central piece of roofing felt down the middle of the roof, ensuring that it overlaps the two larger pieces, and tack it securely at regular intervals to keep it fastened tight.
Finally you can fit the corner trims and fascia boards, and treat your shed with some good quality spirit-based wood preservative to protect it, and to give it that attractive, rustic appearance.
Fit corner trims, fascias and trim any protruding felt. Apply wood
preservative.
